These organizations are working to relieve Texans of hunger in the face of disaster.
An immensely powerful hurricane has crippled Texas, flooding Houston and the surrounding Harris County with at least 30 inches of rain, trapping residents in homes and on flooded streets. With at least 10 fatalities on record, many more injuries, and continued downpour, it's easy to feel helpless reading the news—but whether you're a local Texan or you're many miles away, you're in a position to help victims.
Helping hurricane victims who are dealing with destroyed homes and injured family members secure access to food is one of the most important relief efforts. For locals, food donations can help, but, for the most part, a cash donation will allow organizations to feed those who need it more safely and efficiently.
Feeding Texas is a statewide nonprofit that works to provide quick relief to families, and avoid the "'second disaster' of an unorganized response."
The American Red Cross is stepping in to provide food (along with shelter and support) to affected families. Amazon and Whole Foods are accepting online donations, and will match cash donations "up to $1 million total" to the American Red Cross efforts.
Local food banks Southeast Texas Food Bank, Food Bank of Corpus Christi, Food Bank of the Golden Crescent and Houston Food Bank are accepting financial donations that will be used to distribute food to the community.
State initiative Greater Houston Community Foundation will be accepting donations online and via text message.
Nationally recognized nonprofit Catholic Charities will be donating food, clothing and shelter to those affected, "from all walks of life and religious backgrounds."
Global Giving will be distributing food and water, as well as working on long-term relief plans.
For those of you in-state, Texas grocery chain H-E-B will be taking donations at checkout for some of the aforementioned relief organizations, including Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Feeding Texas.
