Cremant D'Alsace, Camille Braun, Orschwihr, France

The sparkling wines from Camille Braun have an almost cult following in it's home region of Alsace. The certified organic vineyards and winemaking skill of Christophe Braun produce a generous wine with flavors of pear, and apple with a whiff of toasted bread and a hint of ginger. The cepage is 70% Pinot Blanc and 30% Auxerrois and produces an elegant wine with a fine, consistent mousse. This wine makes for an elegant aperitif, but also works well throughout the meal with white meats and fish. Christophe and Chantal Braun also make an excellent Cremant D'Alsace Rose if you can find it. (Pinot Noir is in demand these days in Alsace, but that's another story!)

2015 Dom. de Marcoux Vieilles Vignes Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France

Selected by Patrick Schmitt MW of the UK's The Drinks Business for a Grenache masterclass, it explodes with aromas of red berries and clove, has a palate too complex to whittle down to a paucity of superlatives, its superfine tannins supporting a long, layered finish hinting of fig and sautéed mushrooms. A touch of Mourvèdre is scattered within de Marcoux's 7 acres of Grenache planted approximately 70yrs. ago, all grown organically since 1991. Savor it with an old, hard cheese shaved finely.

2013 Yangarra Grenache High Sands, McLaren Vale, Australia

Winemaker Peter Fraser's circa 1946, own-rooted, biodynamically dry-farmed bush vines are amongst the finest expression is available--not only in Australia but in the world. Sure, Yangarra's Shiraz is stellar, but equally excellent is its Grenache. A single vyd., mineral laden site is the basis for this often overlooked Rhone varietal displaying a medium-full, balanced body densely flavored with plum and cocoa and a warm, spicy finish. Pair it along side a medium rare steak and roasted rutabagas dressed with cumin butter.
