Your metabolism is largely set by genetics — but that doesn’t mean your diet and lifestyle can’t play a big role in making it work for (or against) you.
Metabolism, when spoken about in the context of weight, refers to your body’s ability to burn calories and fat. Some metabolisms are naturally faster or slower than others, and metabolisms can also change with age, hormonal shifts, and the types of medications you are taking.
But if you want to influence your metabolism via a healthy diet and exercise, it’s also a good idea to know which food to steer clear of — including the one food you should avoid because it slowly destroys your metabolism.
Generally speaking, foods that are high in added sugars are among the absolute worst that you can eat if your objective is to boost your metabolism.
And one food that falls right at the top of that list? Soda.
Soda is the very definition of empty calories: it is full of sugar and calories, but gives nothing back in terms of nutritional content.
Your typical soft drinks contains 150 calories per can, with a high 39 grams of sugar, and ZERO grams of protein, fiber, vitamins, or minerals.
Even when you are consuming sugary foods like ice cream or cake, you are gaining back in terms of nutrients like calcium or even fiber, depending on the treat.
But soda is the taker that doesn’t give back.
According to Fox News: “One of the main reasons soda gets a bad rap is because it’s sweetened with a little something known as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). HFCS, a sweetener found in many of America’s highly processed foods and soft drinks, is as damaging as it is cheap … HFCS may lead to obesity because of its negative effects on the metabolism. In fact, consuming high fructose corn syrup can cause something called ‘metabolic syndrome,’ which is basically a group of risk factors for diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Therefore, drinking a glass of soda can directly hurt your metabolism.”
And, though it may contain no calories, diet soda is just plain bad for you, too.
Diet soft drinks contain artificial sweeteners, which are actually sweeter than natural sugar and will, in time, dull your senses to foods that are naturally sweet, reports Health.com.
"Artificial sweeteners trigger insulin, which sends your body into fat storage mode and leads to weight gain," Brooke Alpert, RD, author of The Sugar Detox, told Health.com.
Your best bet is to forego all soft drinks altogether and stick with water, coffee, and tea for a speedier metabolism.
