While standing in line at the supermarket, it’s kind of fun (admit it) to sneak a peek into the shopping cart of the people around you and, perhaps (OK, definitely), piece together a portrait of who they are and how they eat based on the groceries they’re buying.
The rise of online shopping, however, makes it more difficult to do that. But Amazon has given us a little insight into the shopping behavior of others by revealing the best-selling items among its Prime customers from last year. And the revelations are kind of nuts, or, really, totally bananas.
For real: The most-ordered category in Amazon’s private-label Happy Belly brand was snack nuts, and the most-ordered Amazon Fresh item was bananas.
Amazon Pantry sold more bottled water (Nestle Pure Life Water, to be exact) in 2016 than any other item.
And the most-pressed item sold via an Amazon Dash Button, a Wi-Fi connected doohicky that lets people reorder items they use regularly with the push of a button, was Bounty paper towels.
So what does this tell us about Prime members? Hmmm, maybe that they’re inclined to snack healthily? Nuts are a nutritional powerhouse and bananas a great source of potassium, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals, after all. (Or perhaps we’re all making nutty banana bread?)
Also when it comes to healthy beverages, it doesn’t get better than water. And I guess we must also conclude that we are a nation of spillers — but at least we clean up after ourselves. More paper towels!
