GRAPE BRITAIN Wine topples beer and spirits to become Britain’s favourite alcoholic drink, survey says
WINE has overtaken beer as the UK’s favourite alcoholic tipple, a survey suggests.
Eighty-one per cent of adults said they had drunk wine in the past year.
This compared to 79 per cent who enjoyed beer and spirits. The finding comes as the wine industry launches a campaign calling on Chancellor Sajid Javid to stop “penalising” its 33?million drinkers.
In the last decade, taxes on wine have risen by nearly 40 per cent. But they increased by only 16 per cent on beer and 27 per cent on spirits.
Market research firm YouGov surveyed more than 2,000 adults. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio were joint favourite wines, followed by Malbec, Shiraz and Prosecco.
In 2015, it reported that wine was the preferred drink for more 25 to 34-year-olds than ever before.
Wine writer and The Three Drinkers TV show presenter Helena Nicklin said: “These findings put to bed the outdated stereotype of wine as a preserve of the middle classes.
