Firefighters Have Effectively Contained The Wine Country Blazes

Posted: Oct 31, 2017

It took 21 days and a massive amount of resources to control California's deadliest wildfires

The clutch of wildfires that left a deadly path across some of California's most iconic wine regions this month also left a pile of questions: What happened to those still missing? Where exactly did the Napa fire begin. How did it start? And how badly hurt was the region’s $74-billion viticulture business and its attendant tourism industry?

The question of when will the fires be under control, however, has been answered.

According to the latest Cal Fire reports, here’s where things stand on Monday, 21 days since the first of the blazes set off on their fateful rampage:

The Atlas Fire, which took the lives of six people and destroyed more than 51,000 acres was fully contained over the weekend.

The Nuns Fire, which burned more than 56,000 acres, is now 99 percent contained, with 143 firefighter still working to completely stomp it out. Located northeast of Glen Ellen, the Nuns fire is now a compilation of the Oakmont, Norrbom, Adobe, Pressley and Partrick fires.

And the Tubbs Fire — which caused the damage in Santa Rosa and burned to Calistoga — is also 99 percent contained after burning 36,807 acres. All Sonoma County schools were finally reopened as of today.

The causes of these three major fires remain under investigation.
