France Small 2017 Crop Starts To Impact Exports

Posted: Sep 24, 2018

Over the first six months of 2018, France exported 6.16 million hectolitres of wine worth €4.2 billion. The figures translate to respective changes of -1 and +5% compared to the first half of 2017 according to the French Wine and Spirits Exporters’ Federation (FEVS). Heralding new records by value, they reflect the first repercussions of the historically small crop in 2017, the decrease in volume contrasting with last year's rebound in shipments.

“The poor 2017 harvest is starting to weigh on our shipments and will probably continue to do so in the coming months,” said Antoine Leccia, FEVS chairman, in a statement. He added: “The decline has not, however, affected the total value of exports in a global marketplace that combines dynamism with uncertainty”.

Burgundy and Provence buck the trend

While still wine exports fell 1.5% by volume, they increased by 6% in value. The wines of Burgundy and Provence bucked the general trend and outperformed it, with Burgundy rising 4% in volume and 7% in value and Provence posting 13% and 19% increases. Due to their longer production period, sparkling wines were not affected and rose 4% by volume and 2% by value.
